How long does it take for new content to appear in search results?

The flippant answer would be how long is a piece of string. What is a domain name?

A domain name is the unique web address used for your clients to find you online. For example, if your web address is https://www.lawyer.com.au/ then your domain name is lawyer.com.au.

In simple terms, imagine you are a property owner with a house in city. If you want someone to visit your house, you need to give them your address. Your address will be www.yourdomainname. Do you want someone to be able to send a letter to your mailbox? First, you need to have a mailbox, which means you will need to purchase email hosting.

Registering a domain
Popular hosts include GoDaddy, Crazy Domains, Melbourne IT and NetRegistry.

What is the difference between domain, email and website hosting?

Domain Name Registration

Domain name registration is the registration of your unique domain name (such as yourfirm.com.au) so that it can be used with your website and email. No two domain names can be the same and registration can be completed through a domain name registrar like godaddy.com.au, netregistry.com.au, crazydomains.com.au or melbourneit.com.au

Email Hosting

If you want to set up an email address using the domain name which you have registered (such as [email protected] or [email protected]) you will also need to buy email hosting. You can organise email hosting through your domain name host or if you use Google Apps you can use Google servers. If you need any help please contact us.

Many people think that email hosting is connected to the website however, this is not the case. It is a separate service and you don’t need to have a website live on the internet before using email addresses using your domain name.

Website Hosting

Website hosting is where your website lives. The hosting of your website files on a server enabling visitors to be able to view your site.

We use industry leading website infrastructure which provides advanced, simple, fast and secure hosting and service availability of 99.95% uptime, calculated on a monthly basis. Your hosting is properly configured for your business, offers real-time security threat detection, proprietary caching technology and a global content delivery network

We suggest you contact your domain host for this service. If you have not purchased a domain already (such as yourfirm.com.au), you will need to do this before your obtain email hosting.

Website Security

What is an SSL certificate?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private. Transmission of data such as credit card details, account login information or any other sensitive information should be encrypted to keep it secure.

Why do I need an SSL certificate?

Any computer in between you and the server can see your credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) which is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. When an SSL certificate is used, the information becomes unreadable to everyone except for the server you are sending the information to.

How can I get an SSL certificate?

At Active Legal Media, we’re committed to protecting our customers’ online business, while delivering secure and blazingly fast sites. That’s why we provide SSL certificates to all of our customers as part of the Hosting & Maintenance package.

Logo & Images

Do you change the images on the Design Styles?

The images on the sample websites are only to give you an idea of how we can customise the website. For each new website, you can select the images for each page and the banners.

You can supply your own images or can select from the stock images from our stock image supplier, Canstock. You can also select images from www.pexels.com/ and unsplash.com.

You can change these images at any time according to your needs and requirements once we hand over the website.

What file types should I use for my logo or images?

JPG or JPEG – is the most common image file type on the internet. This image type is known as lossy compression which means it loses a bit of quality by blending similar colours together to make the file size smaller. This image type is good for attachments and documents due to the smaller file size. JPGs are useful when a small file size is needed, like in your email signature.

PNG – This type of image was designed to be used on the internet. This image type is known as lossless, so it will not lose quality. But as it is designed for use on the internet it is not a high-quality file to be used for professional printing. PNG file types are also able to be saved with a transparent background so are a much sharper web quality image. A PNG typically has a larger file size than a JPG although it can compress further when storing images containing text, line art, and areas of solid color – useful for logo deisgn.

EPS – is a vector file format which is usually used to produce high-resolution graphics for print. This file type is provided for you if you ever have any graphic design work done and you need to provide a high-quality file to a designer.

Technical

Can I get FTP or SFTP access?

Yes we can provide SFTP access to you. FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol, SFTP stands for Secure File Transfer Protocol. As the name suggests, FTP is used to transfer files between computers on a network. You can use FTP to exchange files between computer accounts, transfer files between an account and a desktop computer, or access online software archives.
